🌄 Family Trip to Visakhapatnam: Exploring Araku Valley, Bora Caves, Simhachalam Temple, Kailasagiri & Vizag Beaches

Introduction – From Bhadrak to Vizag

My name is Biswojit Mallick, and I work in the bustling city of Visakhapatnam (Vizag), Andhra Pradesh. Being away from my hometown Bhadrak in Odisha, I often missed the warmth of family trips. So when my family planned to visit me in Vizag, I was thrilled. Instead of limiting their stay to just my workplace and apartment, I wanted to give them the best experience of Visakhapatnam—a perfect combination of nature, beaches, culture, and adventure.

We planned a 6-day itinerary that covered the famous Araku Valley, Bora Caves, Simhachalam Temple, Kailasagiri Hills, RK Beach, and Rishikonda Beach. What followed was one of the most memorable family vacations of our life.

🌿 Day 1–2: Exploring Araku Valley & Bora Caves – The Hill Station of Vizag

When my family arrived in Visakhapatnam, our first big adventure was the Araku Valley trip. Since we wanted a relaxed journey with comfort for everyone, I booked a rental Innova car for the entire 6-day trip. It was spacious enough for the whole family, and traveling together in one vehicle gave us the freedom to stop wherever we wanted, click pictures, and enjoy the ride at our own pace.

🚗 Road Trip to Araku – A Scenic Drive

The road from Vizag to Araku is about 120 km of pure scenic beauty. As our Innova climbed higher into the Eastern Ghats, the landscapes kept changing—dense forests, rolling hills, and small tribal villages along the way. Every few kilometers, we stopped to take pictures of valleys, waterfalls, and misty hill views. My parents, who usually prefer calm trips, kept saying how refreshing the drive felt, while the kids were excitedly pointing out every new waterfall and monkey they spotted on the roadside.

The best part was that we could take breaks for tea and snacks at roadside stalls—something we would have missed on a train journey. The aroma of fresh pakoras and hot chai at a hilltop dhaba was unforgettable.

☕ Coffee Museum & Tribal Culture

Our first stop in Araku was the Coffee Museum, a must-visit place. Araku is famous for its coffee plantations, and this museum showed us how coffee is grown, processed, and prepared. We tried their special Araku Chocolate Coffee, which became my family’s instant favorite.

Next, we visited the Tribal Museum, where we explored traditional bamboo crafts, musical instruments, and tribal artifacts. My family particularly enjoyed watching the Dhimsu tribal dance performance, which was full of energy and color.

💦 Chaparai Waterfalls – A Family Picnic

We then drove to Chaparai Waterfalls, one of the most fun-filled spots in Araku. The water here flows gently over wide rock formations, making it safe for kids to play. My nephews couldn’t resist splashing around, while the elders sat back enjoying roasted corn from local vendors.

🌌 Night Stay in Araku – Peace in the Hills

By evening, we checked into a cozy cottage in Araku, surrounded by greenery. With the cool breeze and starry night, it felt like time had slowed down. My mother even said it reminded her of our native village in Bhadrak, but with mountains and coffee aroma all around.

🪨 Day 2: Bora Caves – The Underground Wonder

The next morning, after a hearty breakfast, our Innova took us to Bora Caves, located just 30 km from Araku. The ride itself was scenic, with winding ghat roads, forests, and misty views.

🏞️ Inside the Cave – Nature’s Masterpiece

Walking inside Bora Caves was like stepping into a natural wonderland. The massive stalactites and stalagmites formed over millions of years created shapes that looked like temples, animals, and even human faces. One of the highlights was the Shiva Lingam-shaped stalagmite, which locals consider sacred.

The kids were wide-eyed, exploring the passages and pointing at the colorful rock formations lit up by artificial lights. My father, usually quiet, kept saying, “Nature is the greatest architect.”

🌿 A Blend of Adventure & Family Fun

Unlike crowded city attractions, Bora Caves felt raw and adventurous. The chilly air inside the cave was refreshing, and it was fun guiding the kids through the narrow paths. After spending a couple of hours there, we headed back to Araku for lunch and then drove down towards Vizag city.

By the end of Day 2, my family agreed that starting our trip with Araku Valley and Bora Caves by road was the best decision—comfortable, adventurous, and full of memorable bonding moments.

🙏 Day 3: Simhachalam Temple – A Spiritual Pause in Our Adventure

After two days of nature, waterfalls, and caves, it was time to add a touch of spirituality to our journey. On Day 3, we headed to the famous Simhachalam Temple, one of the most revered temples in South India, dedicated to Lord Varaha Narasimha (an incarnation of Lord Vishnu).

🚗 Drive to Simhachalam

Our Innova took us comfortably through the winding roads of Vizag city towards the temple. The greenery around the temple hill was soothing, and the entire family felt a sense of calm even before we reached.

As we entered the temple premises, the majestic gopuram (tower) stood tall, showcasing ancient architecture and carvings. My parents were especially emotional here, as visiting Simhachalam was a dream for them.

🕉️ The Darshan Experience

We joined the devotees in the queue for darshan. Inside the sanctum, the idol of Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy was adorned with chandan (sandalwood paste), which is a unique tradition here. The spiritual atmosphere, the chants, and the temple bells filled the air with positivity.

My mother folded her hands in deep prayer, my father offered a small donation, and the kids lit diyas, enjoying the divine vibe. For me, it was a moment of gratitude—having my family with me in Vizag and seeking blessings together.

🍛 Prasadam & Family Bonding

After darshan, we collected prasadam—pulihora (tamarind rice) and laddus—which tasted heavenly. Sitting under the shade of a big neem tree, sharing prasadam as a family, felt like a moment that would stay etched in our hearts forever.

🌄 Day 4: Kailasagiri – A Hilltop View of Vizag

The next day was about panoramic views, fun rides, and relaxation. We drove to Kailasagiri Hilltop Park, one of the most iconic tourist spots in Vizag.

🚡 Ropeway Ride – A Family Thrill

Instead of directly driving up, we parked our Innova and took the ropeway ride. Hanging mid-air, moving slowly towards the hilltop, we got stunning views of the Bay of Bengal, beaches, and the city below. My nephews screamed in excitement, while my parents held the railing tightly, smiling nervously. It was one of those moments where adventure met laughter.

🗿 Shiva-Parvati Statues & Garden Walks

At the top, the gigantic white statues of Shiva and Parvati welcomed us. We clicked countless family pictures here—it was the perfect backdrop. The lush gardens, toy train, and children’s play areas kept the kids entertained.

We also tried some street food stalls at Kailasagiri, enjoying fresh cut fruits, ice creams, and spicy chaats with a cool breeze around us.

🌅 Sunset at Kailasagiri

By evening, the hilltop turned magical. The sunset over the Bay of Bengal painted the sky in shades of orange and pink. Standing with my family, watching the city lights slowly glow below, I felt proud to host them in Vizag.

🏖️ Day 5: RK Beach – Waves, Walks & Wonder

No trip to Vizag is complete without experiencing RK Beach (Rama Krishna Beach), and for us, Day 5 was all about the sea breeze and sand between our toes.

🌊 Morning Beach Walk

We reached early in the morning, when the beach was calm and refreshing. My father and I went for a walk along the shore, while the kids built sandcastles. My mother sat near the water, dipping her feet in the waves, smiling like a child.

⚓ Submarine Museum & Victory at Sea Memorial

Apart from the beach fun, we explored the INS Kursura Submarine Museum, which fascinated everyone. Walking inside a real submarine, understanding how navy officers lived and worked, was a rare experience. We also paid respects at the Victory at Sea Memorial, which honored India’s naval heroes.

🌅 Evening Vibes

As evening approached, RK Beach turned lively with street food stalls, balloon vendors, and local musicians. We treated ourselves to pani puri, roasted peanuts, and hot jalebis while enjoying the sea breeze.

🏄‍♂️ Day 6: Rishikonda Beach – Adventure & Relaxation

For our final day, we chose Rishikonda Beach, known as the Jewel of the East Coast. Unlike RK Beach, this one felt wilder, with stronger waves and adventure sports.

🌊 Water Sports Fun

The kids were excited about banana boat rides and jet skiing. With life jackets on, we laughed, screamed, and enjoyed the thrill of riding the waves together. Even my parents, though not joining the rides, cheered for us from the shore.

🌴 Relaxing by the Shore

After the water sports, we relaxed under the coconut trees, sipping tender coconuts. The sound of the waves, the golden sand, and the cool breeze made it the perfect ending to our Vizag trip.

🍴 Food Experiences During Our Vizag Family Trip

No trip is complete without food, and in Vizag, every day brought us unique culinary delights.

🌿 Araku Valley Food – Tribal & Authentic

At Araku, apart from coffee, we tried bamboo chicken, a tribal specialty where marinated chicken is slow-cooked inside bamboo shoots over fire. The smoky, juicy flavor was unlike anything we’d tasted before. My father, who usually prefers simple meals, surprisingly loved it.

We also had Araku bamboo biryani and hot pakoras with tea at roadside stalls during our road trip in the Innova. My nephews, who are usually picky eaters, couldn’t resist the crunchy pakoras dipped in spicy chutney.

🥗 Andhra Meals in Vizag

Back in Vizag city, we enjoyed a traditional Andhra thali at a local restaurant. Served on banana leaves, it had everything—pappu (dal), sambar, rasam, pachadi (chutneys), pulihora (tamarind rice), and fiery Andhra pickles. The spice level was high, but the flavors were unforgettable.

My mother particularly enjoyed the curd rice with gongura chutney, while the kids stuck to fried rice and chicken curry.

🦀 Seafood Delights

Being a coastal city, Vizag is heaven for seafood lovers. At RK Beach, we tried freshly fried prawns, fish pakoras, and crab curry. The crispy prawn fritters sold by beachside vendors became my personal favorite snack.

🍧 Sweet Treats & Street Food

At Kailasagiri, we relished ice gola (shaved ice with flavored syrups), while at RK Beach, we couldn’t stop eating roasted peanuts, jalebis, and pani puri. For dessert one night, we went to a bakery near my place in Vizag and tried bobbatlu (sweet stuffed rotis), a festive sweet dish.

🛍️ Shopping & Souvenirs in Vizag

A family trip always ends with shopping, and Vizag had plenty to offer.

  • Araku Coffee & Chocolates – We bought packets of organic Araku coffee and handmade chocolates for relatives back home in Bhadrak.
  • Handicrafts & Tribal Art – At the Tribal Museum, we picked up bamboo crafts and wooden masks.
  • Beach Souvenirs – The kids bought colorful seashell keychains and bracelets from RK Beach stalls.
  • Local Sarees & Handlooms – My mother was delighted to buy an Uppada silk saree, famous in Andhra Pradesh.

🎭 Cultural Experiences & Local People

One of the best parts of the trip was interacting with locals.

  • At Araku, we watched Dhimsu tribal dance. The rhythm, costumes, and energy of the performers were mesmerizing. My nephews even tried copying their steps, making everyone laugh.
  • At Simhachalam Temple, we experienced the Andhra temple rituals—from sandalwood paste offerings to rhythmic chants of priests.
  • In Vizag city, auto drivers and shopkeepers greeted us with warmth, often slipping into Odia once they learned we were from Odisha, since many Odia families live in Vizag.
