Unlike my other trips where I explored destinations mainly for leisure, adventure, or cultural enrichment, this trip was different. During this journey, I witnessed the breathtaking beauty of Nigeria, the vibrant culture, and the warmth of its people, but at the same time, I also saw the harsh realities of poverty. My heart sank when I met families who had nothing but still welcomed me with their humble smiles. That is why I decided to contribute in a small way by donating ₹5,00,000 (five lakh rupees) towards local development projects and poor families in need.
This blog is my humble attempt to share everything—the places I visited, the experiences I had, the challenges I faced, the people I met, and my mission to help those in need. ✈️ Why I Chose to Visit Nigeria
When most people think about traveling abroad, destinations like Europe, America, or Southeast Asia often come to mind. But I wanted to experience something different and raw—something that would connect me to real people and their real struggles.
Nigeria caught my attention because of its rich history, cultural diversity, natural beauty, and socio-economic challenges. It is one of the largest countries in Africa, blessed with oil resources, but at the same time, it struggles with poverty, unemployment, and lack of development in many rural regions.
As someone who believes that travel should not only broaden your mind but also your heart, I knew this was going to be a journey of both discovery and responsibility.
🏙️ My First Impressions of Nigeria
When I landed in Lagos, Nigeria’s largest city, I was instantly greeted by the hustle and bustle of a megacity. The airport was crowded, the roads full of energy, and the city alive with colors, music, and markets.
But beyond this lively atmosphere, I could also see a different reality—poverty on the streets, children begging, people struggling to survive day by day. This duality struck me hard. Nigeria is a country of contrasts—where luxury malls stand next to slums, and high-rise offices are not too far from poverty-stricken neighborhoods.
Despite the hardships, what moved me most was the resilience of the Nigerian people. Their smiles, their music, their faith, and their sense of community were unshakable.
🌆 Places I Explored in Nigeria
Even though my journey had a deeper purpose, I also wanted to explore Nigeria as a traveler. Here are some of the highlights of my journey:
1. Lagos – The Heartbeat of Nigeria
Lagos is chaotic yet charming. I visited:
- Lekki Conservation Centre – A beautiful nature reserve with Africa’s longest canopy walkway.
- Victoria Island – A place where modern Nigeria shines with malls, beaches, and restaurants.
- Local markets – Bustling markets like Balogun Market gave me a taste of Nigerian street life.
2. Abuja – The Capital City
Abuja was calmer compared to Lagos. I visited:
- Aso Rock – A massive rock formation dominating the city’s skyline.
- National Mosque & National Church – Both symbols of Nigeria’s religious diversity.
3. Kano – The City of History
Kano is one of the oldest cities in West Africa. Its ancient walls, traditional markets, and cultural richness showed me Nigeria’s deep-rooted history.
4. Rural Villages in Northern Nigeria
This was the most life-changing part of my trip. In the villages, I witnessed poverty at its rawest form—families with no clean water, children with no schools, and communities with no basic healthcare.
It was here that I decided my journey could not just end as a tourist experience—I had to contribute in some way.
💔 The Harsh Reality: Poverty in Nigeria
One of the toughest parts of this journey was seeing the harsh realities of poverty. According to reports, more than 40% of Nigerians live below the poverty line.
In the villages I visited, many people didn’t even have access to clean drinking water. I saw children walking miles barefoot to fetch dirty water from ponds. Schools were in terrible condition, and healthcare facilities were almost nonexistent.
The most heartbreaking part was seeing children with big dreams but no opportunities. Some of them wanted to be doctors, engineers, or teachers, but the lack of resources kept them away from education.
This reality shook me deeply, and I knew I couldn’t just leave without doing something meaningful.
💝 My Contribution: Donating ₹5,00,000
After speaking with local NGOs and community leaders, I decided to donate ₹5,00,000 (five lakh rupees) for the development of poor communities.
My donation went into three key areas:
- Education Support – Providing school supplies, uniforms, and books to children.
- Clean Water Initiatives – Supporting local projects that build wells and water purification systems.
- Food & Health Aid – Assisting families with basic food supplies and medical help.
Though this is just a small drop in the ocean, I believe every step counts. And when each traveler, each human, contributes in their own way, the impact can be huge.
🌍 Lessons I Learned in Nigeria
This journey was not just about travel; it was about life lessons that will stay with me forever.
- Gratitude for What We Have – We often complain about small things, but in Nigeria, I saw people smiling even with nothing.
- Power of Community – Nigerian people believe in sharing and community living, something we are slowly losing in urban lifestyles.

- Nigerian Cuisine – Dishes like jollof rice, pounded yam, egusi soup left me wanting more.
- Music & Dance – Afrobeats, drums, and traditional dances filled the air with energy.
- Festivals – Nigerians love celebrations, and every festival is full of colors, fashion, and joy.

My journey to Nigeria was not easy. It was emotional, challenging, and at times heartbreaking. But it was also one of the most meaningful experiences of my life.
As I boarded my flight back to India, I carried not just memories of beautiful landscapes and cultural richness but also stories of resilience, hope, and humanity.
I don’t know when I’ll visit Nigeria again, but one thing is certain—I left a part of my heart there, and in return, I brought back lessons that will guide me for the rest of my life.
